Basic Dive Kit

In 1995 the club purchased 6 sets of basic dive kit with money from a Sports Council grant. The kit is intended for pool training use only, but due to the high cost of kit many new 'club divers' borrow this equipment for sea use for up to a year, whilst they decide if diving is the sport for them, or they become able to purchase their own equipment.

THE CLUB DIVE KIT CONSISTS OF:

  • 6 x 12 litre steel tanks 232 bar
  • 6 x STAB Jackets
  • 6 x weight belts and lead weights
  • 6 x Regulators with octopus regulator, direct feed hose & console, contents & depth gauge.

PLEASE NOTE kit is in short supply and needs to be returned as soon as possible. Club divers have priority, if you have this equipment on loan for other than pool use you may be required to bring it to the pool for the new intake training.

Suit

If club kit is available you may borrow it for your initial dives but you will need a good suit, as English waters are cool, even in summer.

It is almost impossible to hire a drysuit, It is, however, possible to hire semi-dry suits from most dive shops including Sound Diving at QAB in Plymouth and this may be a good idea if you are not absolutely sure you are going to like English diving. Be sure to hire a well-fitting suit, if they are baggy and easy to get on then they WILL BE COLD. Suit thicknesses vary and the fit of the suit and its mm thickness will change the amount of lead you need on your weight belt so try to hire the same suit each time you dive, if possible. Hire costs vary but you can expect to pay about £12 to £15 a day.

You may prefer to buy your own suit the choices are:

  • membrane dry suit Costs £400 to £1000
  • neoprene dry suit Costs £400 to £1200
  • neoprene semidry suit Costs £100 to £400

Discuss your planned choice with a diver at the club. Many of us are happy to come along to the dive shop or dive show and offer advice on what might be best for you but remember: every diver will have their own preferences & experience, so you'll need to talk to a few people to get a rounded view!
